Most of the world has always looked at the Wii as a childish console, one in which the next Mario game ends up being a top seller. But is there a chance that the Wii becomes more hardcore?
In past years, Nintendo has stated that they are looking to attract the casual gamers, and so far, it has worked. However, in recent months, XBOX 360 sales have been at a steady increase, while Wii sales have been dropping off. Does the Wii need a hardcore genre, and will the Wii get that hardcore gaming selection?
Within the next year and a half, there are many hardcore games coming out to the Wii consoles. There have also been many hardcore games recently in the last year or so.
From 2006-early-mid 2007, the Wii saw no significant Hardcore games. But from late 2007-2010, we see more and more hardcore games every year. Here are some of the significant ones which had some good sales, as well as hardcore games arriving in the future.
2007:
Call of Duty: World at War - Many Wii owners were stunned when they heard the announcement that the Wii would be getting a Call of Duty game with online multiplayer. There are some major cuts from the other console's versions, but it still is one of the best hardcore games on the Wii. With 4 vs 4 online multiplayer, along with a good selection of maps, and a decent amount of modes, World at War was the first significant hardcore shooter on the Wii.
2008:
No significant hardcore games, but great information on The Conduit.
2009:
The Conduit - The Conduit was a huge game coming to the Wii, available on June 24th in America, and July 10th in Europe. It features 6 vs 6 online, with 7 maps, and 13 game modes. The graphics are absolutely amazing for a Wii game. The Campaign is a little short, but there is a great back story behind, and so many ahievements andunlockables you can get. Some have complained about the games lack stability, as there are many bugs, glitches, and hackers. However, High Voltage Software, Sega, and Nintendo have been working to ban all of the hackers (Which by the way they have done a great job of). Banning all of the hackers will lessen the amount of bugs. Also, they are looking into fixing some glitches, but they would need full support from Nintendo. It's a terrific game with a terrific idea, just some problems with the programming of the game. But it is High Votlage Software's first online Wii game, so it was a great learning opportunity.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare - This could be the king of all Wii hardcore games. World at War Wii is still considered by many to be the best First Person Shooter on the Wii, but Modern Warfare will be so much better. World at War had only 4 vs 4 online, 8 maps, bad graphics, and only about 5 game modes. Modern Warfare for the Wii will have 5 vs 5 online, 16-20 maps, and around 15 game modes or so. This game could be a great turning point for the Wii, in which after this game, many will consider the Wii as a hardcore system. Modern Warfare will be huge on the Wii.
2010:
The Grinder - The Grinder will also be made by High Voltage Software, the ocmpany that created The Conduit. While The Conduit was all about destroying your enemies, The Grinder is the first ever online Wii First Person Shooter Co-op game. That's right, this Wii game has online Co-op. The Grinder is a monster hunter game in which you fight vampires, werewolves, crazy axe throwing monsters, and more. It is reported as having local co-op play, as well as online co-op. High Voltage Software has also been talking about having a versus online mode as well, in which some gamers can play as the monsters, and they will go up against the humans. Should be interesting. I also expect that all of the bugs and problems from The Conduit will be fixed, as now HVS knows more about the Wii console's online support.
Metroid: Other M - This game is a bit of a mystery. There has only been one trailer released, which was actually more of a teaser trailer. From what I saw, this game has a great cinematic feel to it, along with Samus Aran once again destroying everything in her path. Oh yeah, and guess who is creating the game? Team Ninja and NINTENDO!!! Yes, Nintendo which has never before made even the slightest bit of a violent game, and has always made childish games, is now making Metroid (A hardcore game!) We don't know much about the gameplay, but it has a lot of 2D camera angles, but is played 3D. This is definitely a game I will follow and keep you readers updated on.
So as you can see, the Wii has a great hardcore line-up in the next few years. BLPGaming will continue to keep you posted as more info arrises on Modern Warfare, The Grinder, and Metroid: Other M.
